Sommers Organic Outlook
Survey Overview
The Sommers Organic Outlook was conducted by BSM Media on behalf of Sommers Organic ™ to explore consumer opinions on the organic food and organic meat industries. The survey findings were unveiled in conjunction with the All Things Organic ™ trade show in Chicago , March 6-9. The key findings of the survey include:
Nearly three out of four (74.1%) survey respondents purchase organic foods for their family at least once a month.
Consumers noted several reasons for purchasing organic foods, including seeking a healthier alternative (50%), fear of growth hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals (21%), and the desire to purchase the highest quality foods (20%).
Hidden ingredients in food are also an area of concern for consumers. Eighty-five percent said they are very or somewhat concerned about this aspect of the food they eat.
While the organic food category is showing rapid growth, organic meats are still widely unavailable to a majority of consumers. Sixty-one percent said that organic meats are not easily accessible to them as a purchasing option.
Purchasing is on the rise among those who do have easy access to organic meats, however. Seventy-four percent of those who have the option of purchasing organic meats said that they are somewhat or much more likely to purchase organic meats than they have been in the past.
As for those who don't have the easy opportunity to purchase organic meats, there remains a strong interest. Nearly three out of four respondents (74%) said they would purchase organic meats if they were readily available.
A majority of consumers who are purchasing organic meats do so in part over concerns for growth hormones and antibiotics. Sixty-four percent said those concerns are a factor in their purchase of organic meats.
